Description
Raised in Danville, CA, I started running as a freshman in high school where I was fortunate to have great coaches and uplifting teammates. My first memories of the sport stems from the program winning the NCS XC championship D1 title. It blew my mind how I was not only teammates with these fast runners, but also good friends with them. I never thought I would match to their talents, but over the seasons, they kept me honest and consistent with my work and naturally, I improved. By my senior year, I became the top runner on the roster and helped my team to another NCS XC title. My final race, I became the school record holder in the 3mi distance. My progression was fascinating to me and I knew I could become an even better runner. I committed to run in college and was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship. In college, I actually struggled to improve, mostly due to overworking myself. I would run further or faster than what my coach prescribed. I wouldn't run my easy runs easy! This resulted in a 8-month achilles injury that jeopardized my spot on the team. I asked the coach what I could do to contribute, and he mentioned it would be helpful if I biked along the team's runs and workouts. I learned how to pace extremely evenly on the bike and talk to the athletes in times of struggle during a hard session. It was fun and I enjoyed it as much as running. During my injury, I did a ton of cross training to keep my fitness. I was doing 1 hour in the pool in the AM, and again.. another 1 hour in the PM. It sucked, but I knew it had to be done to stay fit. Eventually, I became healthy again, not even 3 weeks of running in, I was scheduled to race an 8k and PR'd by 45 seconds. I was blown away by how much of an effect cross training had. From college, I learned that I wanted to go into coaching, and that there are many different ways athletes can train to get more fit. I majored in Kinesiology and took my craft to become a high school teacher and coach. I worked in education (taught high school Anatomy), and coached 500+ athletes of various abilities over the next 5 years. Many had zero running experience coming into high school, and some had played other sports. I had to promptly mark the expectations on the program and I emphasized that team culture was the most important factor. I wanted athletes to support their teammates in all aspects and not chase times, but chase to improve themselves. I’ve seen numerous athletes who could not run for 10 min straight when I first met them, turn into sub 5:00 milers. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with individuals who show up to practice everyday, and earn a roster spot to compete in college. The aspect that I will cherish forever is seeing a kid develop into a hard working, well-rounded individual who can take the lessons from running into their adult life. After those 5 years, I wanted to chase even higher goals; coaching elite athletes. I quit my teaching/coaching job and moved to Flagstaff, AZ to join a professional distance team, McKirdy Trained. I knew that this would maximize my potential as an athlete, but I could also experience unforgettable lessons being surrounded by other professional runners & Olympians on a daily basis. I do still miss coaching and helping others, hence why I became a certified V.O2 coach!
