Description
Coach Paul Carwile | VDOT Certified Running Coach | ASFA Certified I didn’t come to running with a stopwatch in hand—I came with a list of questions. Years ago, I was dealing with health challenges, extra weight, and injury setbacks. Running felt out of reach. But instead of giving up, I got curious. I wanted to know why running hurt, why some people improved and others didn’t, and what it would take to train in a way that builds you up instead of breaking you down. That curiosity became a passion. I immersed myself in the science of training, mechanics, and performance, both to improve my own running and to help others do the same. Over time, runners started coming to me for advice, and it quickly became more than a hobby. I pursued certification through both the American Sports & Fitness Association and VDOT to back my experience with education and to offer coaching that’s not just personal, but professional. Today, I coach adult endurance athletes, especially those starting later in life or rebuilding after setbacks, who want a better way forward. I specialize in helping everyday runners unlock performance breakthroughs using a structured yet flexible approach. My training philosophy is rooted in VDOT pacing precision and guided by athlete feedback, heart rate drift, and biofeedback trends. I draw from globally respected systems. Jack Daniels’ aerobic discipline, Brad Hudson’s adaptive periodization, and the threshold precision of Norwegian training. I also integrate East African biomechanics and the quiet consistency of Japanese high-mileage traditions. Coaching Approach I prioritize: Threshold development through Canova-style long tempos and progression runs Neuromuscular sharpening with short, controlled efforts that improve stride economy Biomechanics optimization informed by real-world gait work and genetic insights (leveraging strengths like forefoot striking and lower leg mobility while managing challenges like lower pain tolerance) Fatigue management through RHR, VO₂max, and recovery pattern monitoring Whether you’re new to running, returning after time off, or chasing a performance edge others say you’re “too late” to find, my coaching is built to meet you where you are, and help you go further than you thought possible.
Athlete Requirements
You do not need to be fast, experienced, or training for a race to start. I work with runners of all levels, from true beginners to seasoned athletes, who want structure, support, and smarter training. All I ask is that you come ready to learn, give honest feedback, and stay consistent. A GPS watch is strongly encouraged so we can track progress accurately. You will also need to create a free VDOT account, which we will use to manage your training and analyze your workouts. If you do not have these tools yet, I will help you get set up. What matters most is that you are willing to show up, trust the process, and keep moving forward.
