Description
Hello I’m Ian. I am a UK Athletics qualified coach in running fitness. I’ve also done various courses to help improve my knowledge and understanding of sports movement and nutrition. I've been helping athletes for several years now. I’m a VDOT Certified coach as well. I’m mostly a trail or fell runner although all running is good for me. I don’t have a preferred distance as I think each distance has its own story and you should try them all. Here’s a little bit about me. Hopefully it’s not too boring. I got into running when a friend asked me to do a 10k trail race with him. I didn’t even know what it was but agreed anyway for moral support. Something new to try I thought. I was a smoker at the time and didn’t run. My race training was an extra 5 minutes walking the dogs. As you can imagine the race was a struggle, basically run/walk and more run/walk. We did finish the race and I celebrated with two cigarettes. They were fantastic. We had a beer too and that was great. Everything seemed so much better just after the race. The bug got a hold of me that day, although I struggled to walk for a week. This didn’t stop me searching for my next race though. Found one! The Hellhole. Sounds ideal, I thought. This one we were training for. Definitely. I ran once per week with no idea how far in jeans and a polo shirt. Run in whatever feels comfortable, right? We did the race similarly to the first. Run/walk/run. I then got in with a local trail running club running twice per week and racing when I could. Wanting to improve I started asking for advice and a few of my new running friends gave me some tips and snippets of what they do. They were mostly ultra runners though. But that is a long story. That’s basically how I got into running and then coaching at the age of 37ish. I’m 45 now. When it comes to distance and terrain I’ve raced a good variety. I do love a race but I’m not overly competitive, as I want everyone to have a great run and enjoy it, although some I’ve raced against might say I am competitive. Thus far I’ve run track, trail, road, fell cross country and mountain races,100 meters up to 110 miles and everything in between.
