I have run for over 40 years, starting with jogging to lose weight, causing me to do much research on healthy diets for athletes. I peaked very late in my career, winning the 100k Oxfam Trailwalker Japan at age 52 in a time of 16h44m. Over these 40 years of running my number of age group wins has increased with every new age group I have entered. I have run in Germany, my home country, and in Japan, my country of residence, in many other countries in Europe (five time finisher of the Bienne 100k in Switzerland) and in several countries in Southeast Asia, particularly Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. I have been influenced by Japanese runners, such as my personal friend, three-time Olympian Akio Usami (2:10:38 in 1968). I am especially interested in a healthy lifestyle for athletes, and achieving long, sustainable running careers. That said, I also focus on speed and competitive ambition. For speed training, since the 1990s, I have been using Frank Horwill's 5-pace system, which I have augmented with more contemporary approaches from the Jack Daniels school. In addition to running myself, I also organize running events in Japan and Cambodia. These events have come to be known as 'ecomarathons', because while we seek to achieve a profit, the events also support social causes and try to be environmentally friendly by using solar energy and recycled materials. runningintokyo.com ecomarathon.run runningincambodia.org
